For laptop toting tourists and residents alike, free wireless internet access is the Holy Grail in Bangkok. Here’s a couple of places you can get it
One of the more irritating things about wireless internet is the way that it’s frequently sold as a premium product, with airports, cafes and hotels regularly charging up to 10 dollars an hour for something that costs them barely nothing to install or maintain. In Bangkok, wireless internet access is available at virtually every Starbucks and Au Bon Pain - but you have to pay an exorbitant 150 baht an hour to connect.
Luckily, some companies are starting to realise the benefits of offering customers free wifi internet access. The Dubliner pub, located between Soi 22 and Soi 24 on Sukhumvit Road, has just started providing good quality free wireless internet to its customers. The Dubliner is my local and is a lovely pub - dark wood, great staff, good beers and excellent food.
If you prefer a less boozy environment, the Tamarind Cafe nearby to the Dubliner on Sukhumvit Soi 20 is a gorgeous cafe complete with spiral staircase and everchanging artwork from local artists on its pristine white walls. Tamarind specialises in excellent, Asian-influenced vegetarian food and excellent smoothies and cocktails, with and without alcohol. They also offer free wireless internet access but are only open from 3pm on weekdays and all day at the weekend.
