The Buddhist monks of Suan Mokkh in Thailand welcome foreigners to join them on a meditation retreat where they can get away from the world and reflect on their place in it

50 kilometres away north from the Southern Thailand town of Surat Thani, the Suan Mokkh Retreat offers meditation retreats in both Thai and English for Thais and foreigners alike. The monks charge a nominal sum for food but that’s it - the retreat is free otherwise. 11 days of getting extremely early and spending the entire time in silence is probably not most people’s ideas of a holiday - but it’s also fair to say it could well be a life changing experience if you can hack it. The monks have a website that gives a lot of information about the retreat and Buddhist teachings. The retreats begin on the first day of each month and you simply turn up the day before in the morning to register - no forward booking required. See the site for more info.

If you are looking for something more spa like, you might want to check Kamalaya on Koh Samui, which offers Essential Detox and Yoga Synergy retreats each month.
